I once read that the difference between a crazy person and a sane person is that a crazy person, never even for a second, doubts their sanity. This is never more true than in "Short of a Picnic" by Eric Shapiro. This collection of short stories, dealing with several different mental disorders is incredibly insightful and thought-provoking, while leaving the reader wondering just how the author became so familiar with so many different ailments of the human psyche? The stories in this book are written mainly from the patients point of view, or someone very close to them, giving each disorder a much more personal touch: almost a back story, a face or name to go with each affliction. This book has forever changed the way I will look at the guy on the park bench who is talking to himself (or perhaps some imagined companion). Fantastic read!

These short stories are a look in to the mind of mental illness. The author does an incredible job of looking at various types of mental illnesses and paints, what I would imagine to be, a true picture of the mind of individuals who suffer from these issues. Thought-provoking and scary at the same time!
I was very disappointed at the stories in this book. Mr. Shapiro either has not done his research or chose to ignore it, as many of the mental illnesses are portrayed inaccurately here. Sorry I bought and read it.
An excellent and honest collection of stories. It is very difficult to capture the feeling of mental illness, but I believe that Shapiro has done an amazing job of it. Both disturbing and compassionate, these stories give the reader a look into some very different minds.

Highly recommended.
This collection is amazing! The stories in this book are amusing, scary, and always heart-breaking. One character's letter to his former teacher is especially touching to me, personally.
The author has an incredible grasp of description and pacing, making this a fairly quick but haunting read.
Hollywood etc. often tries to portray mental illness, and usually misses the mark. They focus only on the symptoms, and lose sight of the person experiencing the illness. Shapiro doesn't just hit the nail on the head with this one, he sledge-hammers it. His writing is engrossing, but his insight into mental illness is haunting and hypnotizing. The plots and language aren't always pretty. But they are empathetic, raw, real, honest. So, so glad I read this. Now I'm off to read it again.
This collection of short stories is a page turner that gives an unblinking look on the lives of people with mental disorders. Honest and compelling, allowing the readers to comprehend insanity, even if only for a brief moment. The short stories leave a strong dose of reality, packed with a strong sense of compassion and sincerity. On top of being insightful, it is an entertaining read. The prose is clean and minimal and consistently leads the reader through the stories.

Highly recommended.
I was grateful for the category given at the beginning of the book, but I waited until after reading the book to see which mental illness fit which story. I'm not a psychologist, but was able to identify most of them. It made for interesting reading, although at times difficult. I find there is plenty of food for thought, "seeing' the examples of each mental illness instead of a text book definition.
